Bill Bolling was born and raised in the coalfields. Bill's parents worked hard to make sure that he had an opportunity to succeed. Their hard work paid off, and in 1979 Bill became the first member of the Bolling family to graduate from college.
It was while attending college that Bill met and married his wife, the former Jean Ann Kincaid. In 1981 bill and Jean Ann moved to Mechanicsville in Hanover County to put down roots and begin their family.
In 1991 Bill Bolling sought his first elected political office. He was elected to the Hanover County Board of Supervisors and served as a member and Chairman of the Board until 1995.
In 1995 Bill was elected to the Senate of Virginia. In one of Virginia's most hotly contested political campaigns, Bolling defeated a twenty year Democrat incumbent and helped the Republican Party obtain parity in the Senate for the first time.
During his service in the Senate, Bill Bolling emerged as one of Virginia's most effective conservative leaders. He worked to keep taxes low and create a pro-business environment in Virginia. He also sponsored legislation to create a children's health insurance program in Virginia, and led the fight to reduce the amount of garbage being imported to Virginia from other states.
As a member of the General Assembly, Bolling served as Chairman of the Joint Republican Caucus and the Virginia Republican Senatorial Committee. He also served as Chairman of the Senate's sub-committee on Health Care, the Joint Commission on Health Care, the Commission on the Future of Virginia's Environment and the Chesapeake Bay Commission.
On November 8, 2005, Bill Bolling was elected to serve as the 40th Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In an election year that favored Democrats, Bolling received more votes than any other statewide Republican candidate, a testimony to the strength of the campaign he ran and the effectiveness of the message he delivered to the people of Virginia.
As Lieutenant Governor, Bill Bolling has promoted a conservative legislative agenda that focuses on the things he believes in - keeping government small and focused on its core responsibilities, keeping taxes low for families and businesses, making certain that Virginia remains a great place to do business, and finding solutions to the challenges that face our state.
Lieutenant Governor Bolling is widely recognized for the work he has done to improve the quality of health care in Virginia. Through his Steptember program, Ending Cervical Cancer In Our Lifetime initiative, and Helping Virginians Breath Easier campaign, Lieutenant Governor Bolling has helped focused public attention on important health care issues like obesity, cervical cancer and asthma.
Most recently, Lieutenant Governor Bolling has launched a major statewide initiative, 100 Ideas For The Future Of Virginia. This two year program is designed to focus attention on the major challenges facing Virginia and finding solutions to these challenges. Through a series of Town Hall Idearaisers, Lieutenant Governor Bolling hopes to involve the people of Virginia in developing a long term strategy for addressing important issues like education, transportation, public safety, health care, protecting the environment, reforming government, and more.
In the home, on the job and in the community, Bill Bolling has proven himself to be a dynamic and effective leader - a leader who can get things done!
