The Governor’s Commission on Economic Development and Job Creation held its second full meeting today at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College in Richmond. During today’s meeting the Commission presented an interim report executive summary. Over the past two months the Commission has developed strategies and initial policy recommendations to better position Virginia to create jobs and grow the economy. Its nine subgroups have been analyzing Virginia’s economic development programs and agencies; assessing competitive initiatives in other states; considering existing tax and regulatory impediments to job creation; and, engaging private sector and state and local government stakeholders.

Governor's Economic Development and Jobs Creation Commission Holds First Meeting

At Meeting, McDonnell Highlights Components of his "Jobs and Opportunity" Agenda

Governor Bob McDonnell continued his focus on turning Virginia's economy around with the first meeting of his Economic Development and Jobs Creation Commission in Richmond. The Commission was established by Governor McDonnell's Executive Order Number One, which was issued moments after he took the Oath of Office on January 16th. During today's meeting the Commission, co-chaired by Lieutenant Governor and Chief Jobs Creation Officer Bill Bolling and Senior Economic Advisor Bob Sledd, outlined their goals and workplan for the next five months. The Governor also used today's meeting to highlight 17 pieces of legislation from his "Jobs and Opportunity" agenda that received broad bipartisan support during the recent session of the General Assembly. Governor McDonnell Announces Members of Governor's Economic Development and Jobs Creation Commission

Commission will be Co-Chaired by Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling and Governor's Senior Economic Advisor Bob Sledd

April 19, 2010

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell today announced the members of the Governor's Economic Development and Jobs Creation Commission created by the his Executive Order Number One, issued moments after he took the Oath of Office on January 16th. Keeping in mind the unprecedented economic difficulties facing Virginia families and businesses, the highest unemployment rate in decades and the ever increasing competiveness of the global economy, the Commission will work to put forth bold and innovative ideas addressing these significant challenges. The Commission is scheduled to have its first meeting in May, and will complete its initial report to the Governor by October 16, 2010. Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling, who serves as Virginia's first-ever Chief Jobs Creation Officer, and Bob Sledd, the Governor's Senior Economic Advisor, will serve as Co-Chairs of the Commission.

Establishing the Chief Job Creation Officer and the Governor’s Economic Development and Job Creation Commission

Economic opportunity and free enterprise is the bedrock of a stable and prosperous Commonwealth. Virginia is home to abundant resources, fiscal responsibility and boundless human potential, and the entrepreneurial spirit is evident throughout this great Commonwealth. However, in light of the unprecedented economic difficulties facing Virginia families and business, the unacceptable high unemployment rate, and the ever increasing competiveness of the global economy, bold and innovative ideas are necessary for the Commonwealth to address this significant challenge. The following measures are the first crucial steps to promoting economic recovery and job creation in Virginia.
