Richmond - Lieutenant Governor Bolling today issued the following statement on casting the tie-breaking vote in support of SB639 and HB1248:

"Today I was pleased to cast the tie-breaking vote in support of SB639 and HB1248, the Governor's transportation bill. This legislation started out as a substantive effort to address our state's critical transportation needs. While many of the most significant provisions in this bill were removed during the legislative process, the bill still represents a step in the right direction and a modest effort to increase funding for highway maintenance and construction and improve the coordination of land use planning and transportation planning.

"While I was pleased to support the passage of this legislation, I continue to be frustrated by the inability of the General Assembly to forge consensus around a long term solution to our transportation needs. If such a solution is to be found, the members of the General Assembly are going to have to find a way to significantly increase the amount of money in the Transportation Trust Fund, and we cannot wait much longer to achieve this consensus. Many parts of our state now face critical transportation needs that are affecting our economic viability and the quality of life of our citizens. This is an issue that must be resolved."
