Richmond - Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling today issued the following statement in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

"Today, all Virginians pause to remember the life, lessons and legacy of a great leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Through courage, perseverance and faith, Dr. King fought to overcome discrimination and inequality. He endeavored to address discrimination and inequality and rise above the division and prejudice of his day by appealing to the spirit of justice and the good nature of man. He rightly reminded all Americans that we should not be judged by the color of our skin, but by the content of our character.

"Dr. King was an eloquent orator whose teachings we should all remember. My favorite quote from Dr. King has always been the following:

'The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.'

"Dr. King practiced this lesson everyday and each and every American should remember these words when facing challenges and struggles in their individual lives.

"Today, I join all Virginians in honoring the memory and accomplishments of a great American, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."
