Press Release
STATEMENT OF LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR BILL BOLLING ON MAYOR WILDER'S DECISION NOT TO SEEK REELECTION
Friday, May 16, 2008
Richmond - RICHMOND - Earlier today, Richmond Mayor, and former Virginia Governor, L. Douglas Wilder, announced that he would not seek re-election as Mayor of the City of Richmond when his current term of office expires. In response to this announcement, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling issued the following statement:
"I was both surprised and disappointed to hear that Doug Wilder would not seek re-election as Mayor of the City of Richmond. Doug Wilder has represented the people of Virginia in several different capacities over the years and he has a distinguished record of public service.
"Doug Wilder became Mayor of the City of Richmond at a pivotal time in the city's history. As the city transitioned to a popularly elected Mayor, I can think of no one better suited to serve in that position.
"As with any public service, Mayor Wilder's term was full of successes and disappointments. However, I believe that Doug Wilder's time as Mayor was of tremendous benefit to the citizens of the City of Richmond. Mayor Wilder fought for commonsense principles, like making certain the City was spending taxpayers' money efficiently and that schools were held accountable for the education of our children.
"I thank Mayor Wilder for his willingness to serve the City of Richmond as its first popularly elected Mayor. Richmond is stronger today because of his service.
"I wish Doug Wilder well in his future pursuits, both private and public."
