Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi Reflects on the Legacy of Richmond Free Press

RICHMOND, VA — Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi released the following statement regarding the announcement of the closure of the Richmond Free Press:

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the closure of the Richmond Free Press, a vital institution that for decades amplified the voices of our communities, particularly Black Richmonders. Founded by Raymond H. Boone Sr., who served as editor and publisher, the Richmond Free Press was first published in 1992, with a mission to empower readers and foster open debate on public policy. Boone drew on decades of his own experiences as a journalist and editor with publications such as the Suffolk News-Herald and the Richmond Afro-American, and he created an alternative to mainstream media which far too often failed to provide fair and inclusive coverage.

“This closure is part of a broader pattern of local and independent newspaper closures across the country, threatening the health of our democracy and the accessibility of local news. The Richmond Free Press faced significant challenges over the years, yet it persevered, elevating marginalized perspectives and shaping civic life in meaningful ways. While the publication may be closing, its legacy endures, and the impact it has had on our community will continue to be felt for years to come.”
